Suzuki were already dabbling with a twin in the form of the TL1000S. It's safe to say that the S didn't leave a very lasting impression on many enthusiasts. While the engine was great, the handling really let the bike down. Second generation S's came with a steering damper as standard which was a partial improvement, but didn't fix the problem.

The Suzuki TL1000's engine has lived on past the TL1000S and TL1000R. First, Suzuki used a mid-tune version of the Suzuki TL1000S's engine in the Suzuki SV1000. The SV1000 was a bit of a confusing bike for Suzuki, in that it was a mid-spec sport bike not clearly intended for either the track or the street.

The Suzuki TL1000 was based on a 2-cylinder V-shaped (90 °) liquid-cooled engine, 996 cc, producing 125 hp. power on the TL1000S model and 135 hp. on TL1000R version. Due to the characteristic forward tilt of the cylinders, this arrangement is often called L-shaped. This engine was subsequently also installed on models Suzuki SV1000 and Suzuki.
